Poem: The Day That Changed Us All
A bright September morning, a day like any other When out of the clear blue sky, disaster did uncover. Two planes flew into towers, once standing proud and tall.
Fire, smoke and devastation, responding to the call.
So many innocent people, going about their day Lost in an instant, in such a tragic way. First responders rushing in, as others rushed away. An act of terror and hate, we’ll never forget that day.
A third plane crashed in a field, its target never found. While at the Pentagon, more innocents lost on the ground. So much needless heartache, loss and pain. Our unity and resilience, the only thing that remained.
Never forget those who left us, the survivors still carrying on. And the brave heroes who gave their all, until the long night was gone.
America stood strong, though shaken and distressed. An awful day forever etched, in our nation’s consciousness.
Blog Post:
September 11, 2001 is a date that will forever live in infamy in the United States. On that tragic day, 19 terrorists associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes, crashing two of them into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, and another into the Pentagon building in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The attacks resulted in the tragic loss of over 3,000 innocent lives and massive destruction to American symbols of economic and military power.
9/11 shattered America’s sense of security and changed the course of history for our nation. After the horrific events, nothing would ever be the same. I was only a child on that fateful day, but I can still vividly recall the shock and anguish felt across the country. Friends lost parents, siblings lost brothers and sisters. The pain was immense.
But united in grief, Americans found a renewed sense of patriotism and came together to support one another. First responders, including firefighters, police officers and paramedics, worked tirelessly in dangerous conditions to rescue people from the wreckage. Many paid the ultimate price. The courage and selflessness displayed was inspiring.
In the years since, the U.S. has honored those lost with memorials and museums. Survivors and families of victims still mourn their profound loss. We must never forget the sacrifices made and lives impacted. Though it shook us to our core, 9/11 showed the best of humanity. In dark times, we came together, found strength in community, and persevered. We healed as a nation stronger than before.
